FND's 25th Anniversary Celebration-Tampa

FND's 25th anniversary celebration tour across the state of Florida continued last weekend at MacFarlane Park in Tampa. MacFarlane Park is home to Freedom Playground, Tampa's first universally accessible playground.

We spent a wonderful afternoon sharing food and information with families. There were games and activities for the kids, including a costume contest where everyone was a winner!

These events would not be possible without the support of local businesses that donate goods and services to their community. This event was a success in large part due to the following contributors: Domino's Pizza on Tampa StreetEinstein's Bagels on N. Dale Mabry HighwayThe Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI)Sonny's BBQ

Talent Show for Children with Disabilities

Family Network on Disabilities wants to provide an opportunity for children with disabilities in the Tampa Bay Area to shine in the spotlight. We have submitted the idea to the Pepsi Refresh Project and expect to be accepted for the voting period beginning December 1, 2010. Stay tuned as we are able to provide you with additional information so that you can help this dream become a reality. This will be a community effort and will be provided free of charge for the children with disabilities that are performing and their families. The Pepsi Refresh Project has granted over $10,000,000 so far this year to individuals and organizations that want to make a difference. We hope that we can add this worthwhile project to the list of grant recipients.

Your votes will help bring this to life, so please stay tuned. We will be able to provide you with the link to support this project in the coming weeks.

Love and Logic

The following article was distributed by the Love and Logic Institute, Inc.  Love and Logic is a philosophy founded in 1977 by Jim Fay and Foster W. Cline, M.D. and provides simple and practical techniques to help parents, educators and facilitators.

Aren't There Enough Unpleasant, Rude People in the World?

If there weren't enough pleasantness-challenged people in the world, there might be a good reason for creating more of them. But, as you've probably noticed, there seem to be plenty.  Mary is doing her part to increase the ratio of world niceness to nastiness. She also knows that nice kids are more likely to choose nice nursing homes for their elderly parents. As a result, she's careful to demonstrate niceness to the teller at the bank, to the mail carrier, to the grocery store checkout clerk, etc. Mary has a secret: she doesn't always feel like being so pleasant to every one of these folks. Sometimes, she'd just as soon nod, grunt, or ignore them altogether. But Mary has her precious little daughter Shelby in tow as she goes to all these places and sees these individuals. From my son's DVD, Painless Parenting for the Preschool Years, Mary was reminded that important values such as respect are "caught" by little ones through the powerful force of modeling. She could spend lots of time telling Shelby to be nice, but she has learned that it is far more effective to show Shelby exactly what it looks like. Shelby has even learned to say nice things and smile as they progress through their day.  And even at her young age, little Shelby has noticed that people seem to be happier around Mommy, and they often tend to be nice right back. Can you imagine the advantage Shelby might have when she's making friends or interviewing for jobs some day? If only more moms and dads set out intentionally to model courtesy and respectfulness for their kids when they were driving, running errands, and interacting with other human beings. It just might work better than yelling, "Hey!  You be nice!", when they are less-than-sweet. Go to www.loveandlogic.com for more information.
