Sloppy Joes Restaurant will host a beach event-Treasure Island, Florida

by tara 9/30/2008 7:13:00 AM
On Saturday, October 11, 2008, The Treasure Island Chamber of Commerce along with the help of Sloppy Joes Restaurant will host a beach event to raise awareness for our own Florida sea turtles, and the more than twenty percent of the Florida population who has disabilities. Proceeds from this bene-fit event will help to fund and further the missions of the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and Family Network on Disabilities of Florida (FND). We expect this event to be the first in an annual effort and we need your help!

Mr. Tony Ryals, an artist from Jacksonville, Florida, has Arthrogryposis, which locks up all the joints in his arms and legs. This extremely rare condition leaves his limbs virtually useless, so he paints the only way he can, by holding the brush in his mouth. Tony is well known for his marine life paint-ings, and has created all of the sea turtle and hatchling images for this event. Tony will attend the event and paint live to promote awareness for both non profits.

Sloppy Joe’s restaurant conceived this beach event as a way to give back to the community. Having a business on the beach requires one to be aware of sea turtle nesting season and the delicate nature of this protected species. The art of Tony Ryals, and the work of FND brought it all together. Sloppy Joe’s began selling tee shirts to raise awareness for the cause in May 2008.

The Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) is active in the rescue, rehabilitation and release of sea turtles. Additionally, to date they have released approximately 13,000 hatchlings. They have been se-lected by Pinellas County to monitor nearly 26 miles of Pinellas County’s coast line and report on any nesting activity. CMA is honored to be an integral part of this event. Their website hosts a live webcam where you can view sea turtles in real time!

FND has been serving Florida families for over twenty years. They are a statewide network of fami-lies and individuals of all ages who may be at-risk, have disabilities, or have special needs and their families, professionals, and concerned citizens. They believe that everyone has intrinsic value and the inherent right to:

Respect Independence

Knowledge Freedom of Choice

Inclusion Quality of Life

Success Equality
